APRIL 2020

Vaughn Henson
As the world continues to band together to curb the spread of COVID-19, it is incredible to see how people and industry are working together to get through this crisis.

The Remanufacturing Industries Council (RIC) would like to assure you that we will continue to provide pertinent information and assistance to the reman community. We recognize that changes are happening quickly

so we are updating our COVID-19 resource page regularly to keep you informed of available opportunities.  Also, we will continue to provide industry news and educational resources as well as share industry perspectives. Please be sure to click the survey link below to help us gauge the effects of the pandemic on your business.

The RIC and the Remanufacturing Association Alliance have once again teamed up. Together we have submitted a proposal to the Census Bureau to amend the current NAICS codes to include remanufacturing. We are asking companies to submit a letter of support by April 26. You can find more information on that below.

As always, we’re here to serve you.

Regards,

Vaughn Henson

Chairman

NAICS CODES FOR REMANUFACTURING
NAICS Codes for Remanufacturing
The RIC has developed and submitted a proposal to create North American Industry Classification Systems (NAICS) codes for the remanufacturing industry. Several of RIC’s alliance partners have signed on to this letter including AFRA, APRA, I-ITC, and PERA.

The creation of these codes is vital for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data as it relates to the reman industry. The data will help us to better understand the size and breadth of the industry and will be used by both the private and public sectors. A few use cases include:

  • Helping an OEM consider the benefits of adding a remanufacturing department.
  • Helping a business find the best location for their dealer network, retail shops, or other locations.
  • Helping governments understand the availability of essential components when evaluating possible shutdowns.
  • Helping governments anticipate how businesses will fare in a recession.
  • Helping agencies identify economic development targets.

How to help.
The Census Bureau only makes updates to the NAICS codes every five years. You can show your support by submitting a letter of support by April 26, 2020. Full instructions, as well as a draft letter, are available on the RIC website.

PANDEMIC RESPONSE
REMADE Institute & Manufacturing USA
The U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has opened a funding opportunity for rapid, high-impact projects that support the nation’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Only Manufacturing USA Institutes such as RIC member, REMADE Institute, are eligible to participate in this opportunity. NIST anticipates awards to be between $250,000 to $10 million.

If you have an idea for a rapid, high impact project that supports the nation's response to the COVID-19 pandemic and aligns with the mission of the REMADE Institute, send a short abstract that outlines your idea to remade@remadeinstitute.org.

Reman Day
#REMANDAY2020
A pandemic didn't keep remanufacturers from celebrating Reman Day on April 9. Most companies had to pivot to holding virtual events, We saw an increase in company-sponsored webinars as well as virtual tours. It was wonderful to see all of the participation on  social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

It's never too soon to start planning for next year!
