The entire global economy is feeling the effects of the coronavirus outbreak. While each industry has its unique challenges, some industries are experiencing new opportunities. The next few months will be telling.

My colleague and friend, Dr. Nabil Nasr and I were scheduled to speak at the World Remanufacturing Summit in Milan, Italy, on March 2-3. Unfortunately, the event had to be postponed due to health and

travel concerns related to the coronavirus. We will let you know when that has been rescheduled.

With all that said, I can’t help but reflect on the essence of collaboration and our connection through the reman council.  I’m very thankful for each member of our Council and our Remanufacturing Association Alliance partners. Every day we hear stories and see examples of how groups working together are able to achieve so much more than they could have if they were working individually. Reman Day is an excellent opportunity to come together, collaborate and help advance the entire remanufacturing industry. I would encourage you to show your support and register an event at

World Remanufacturing Conference
Registration is now open for the World Remanufacturing Conference on September 23-24, 2020.
This year’s event explores three key sustainability themes: electrification, the circular economy, and collaboration for impact.

In addition to the conference, there will be pre-conference activities at the Rochester Institute of Technology. New this year is a short-course on Advancing Remanufacturing Processes. Aimed at remanufacturing engineers, this one-day workshop will help you:
  • Learn how to communicate sustainability and circularity in your business.
  • Learn when to apply various traditional and cutting edge technologies in the areas of cleaning, inspection, and additive repair.
  • See the trends of industry 4.0 in remanufacturing, including the implementation of vision systems and machine learning
  • Grow your network of remanufacturing contacts and resources

A pre-conference networking dinner will be held at the Golisano Institute for Sustainability (GIS), one of the greenest buildings in the world.  GIS is powered by solar, wind, and fuel cell technology, and features a rooftop butterfly garden, a green wall, a smart building system envelope with over 1,000 sensors, and constructed with the highest efficiency building materials. The evening will begin with walking tours of the 12,000 sq. ft. remanufacturing testbed featuring the latest equipment and technology for inspection, cleaning, and repair, followed by a cocktail hour and casual dinner.

Register now for $200 off! RIC members be sure to log-in for the member discount pricing.

RIC was represented in the OECD Workshop on International Trade and the Circular Economy. The workshop was held in Paris, France on February 26-27, 2020. RIC Director, Dr. Nabil Nasr, REMADE Institute/Golisano Institute for Sustainability, RIT, led a panel on The Benefits of Remanufacturing.

The objectives of the workshop were to examine the interlinkages of international trade and circular economy, to explore how trade and circular economy objectives can be mutually supportive, and to discuss barriers and opportunities to expand trade specifically in those products that support the circular economy.
American National Standards Institute logo

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has announced a student paper competition to show how standards support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In 2015 the United Nations rolled out the plan, Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, to bring peace and prosperity to the world. In 2016, they announced 17 Sustainability Development Goals (SDG) to help them achieve their game plan by 2030. These goals were agreed upon and adopted by 193 countries.

SDG 12, Responsible Production and Consumption ensures sustainable consumption and production. This goal involves the efficient use of resources to reduce our ecological footprint. It is essential for both environmental and economic stability. According to the website, "since sustainable consumption and production aims at ‘doing more and better with less,’ net welfare gains from economic activities can increase by reducing resource use, degradation and pollution along the whole life cycle, while increasing quality of life."

The RIC001.1: Specifications for the Process of Remanufacturing supports the SDG 12. This standard, approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in 2016, provides a formal definition of reman and outlines the unique steps involved in the remanufacturing process.

Join ANSI in helping to show the world how standards help to support the Sustainable Development Goals. Learn more.
